Research → Action → Impact: Leveraging Data to Close the Wage Gap for Latinas
Thursday, October 3, 2024 (Latina Equal Pay Day) | 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. CT
On October 3rd (Latina Equal Pay Day), the Equal Pay Chicago Coalition (EPCC), hosted a powerful virtual event in collaboration with Mujeres Latinas en Acción, the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR), Women Employed, and Chicago Federation of Labor.
Latinas are disproportionately represented in underpaid industries and often lack basic workplace protections. Farmworkers, domestic workers, and immigrant women, in particular, face exclusions from essential employment safeguards, leaving them vulnerable to wage theft, sexual harassment, and exploitation. Until these vital workers achieve economic security, our communities and economy will not thrive to their full potential.
During this insightful webinar, we explored key research conducted by IWPR and discussed how this data can be utilized to close the wage gap, not only for Latinas but for all women and non-binary individuals. Together, we can turn research into actionable strategies that support economic justice and build stronger, more equitable communities.
Speakers:
Martha Susana Jaimes, IWPR
Starr De Los Santos, Women Employed/EPCC
Linda Xóchitl Tortolero, Mujeres Latinas en Acción
Moderator: Izzy (Isabel) Dobbel, Chicago Federation of Labor

Tuesday, March 12, 2024 (Equal Pay Day) | 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. CT, via Zoom
Salary transparency becomes the law in Illinois on January 1, 2025, but businesses across the city and the country are not waiting to reap the benefits of this evidence-based pay equity practice. On March 12th, the Equal Pay Chicago Coalition hosted a virtual panel focused on how employers can make salary transparency work, including practical tips and inspiration in fostering transparency and pay equity in their organizations. We showcased employers who are instituting salary transparency practices, and who can offer lessons learned as well as the benefits and how to leverage them in attracting top talent, and importantly, helping to strengthen women’s financial wellbeing and close gender and racial wage gaps.
